at first let me salute Charles
Spurgeon whose writings profoundly influences this work, as it
did Psalms 1.
For me this is a word in season
as I considered the doom and gloom that our society faces plagued
by violence on every hand. Oh what glorious Hope!
Psalms 2
1 Why
do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel
together, against the LORD,
against his anointed, saying,
3 Let
us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He
that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them
in derision.
5 Then
shall he speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in his sore
displeasure.
6 Yet
have I set my kings upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I
will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art
My Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask
of me ,and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance,
and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou
shall break them with a rod of iron; thou shall dash them in pieces
like a potter's vessel.
10 Be
wise now therefore, O ye kings : be instructed ,ye judges of the
earth.
11 Serve
the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss
the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his
wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all that put their
trust in Him.
That human hatred against the
God of our salvation has been evident since Herod , Pontious Pilate
and the following of Israeli's of that time is no new thing under
the sun, girths me up to appreciate that a look a history demonstrates
that God exacts upon his urserpers their just recompense.
1Why
do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel
together, against the LORD,
against his anointed, saying,
Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from
us. Surely Its most peculiar that
mere mortals should try to bear arms against their God - even
as heathens raging , roaring like the sea , tossed to and fro
,with restless waves, as the ocean in a storm ; and then we mark
the people in their hearts imagining a vain thing against God.
When there is much rage there is generally some folly, and in
this case there is an excess of it .The
kings of the earth set themselves,- in
determined malice they set themselves in apposition against God.
Huddled together they bind their forces in wicked craft , deliberately
to proclaim earthly strategies and formulas- fully aware of its
evil ,selfish ,selfserving base but dressed in the usual camouflage
of righteousness ( the very thing they are bent on distorting.)
The crafty nature of Kings and
their nations ,to bring into derision the things of God serves
as it should to spur the child of God to take hold of their God
given abilities and let God's anointing manifest in their lives
to posess the land in every arena .That the violent taketh the
kingdom by force means we must be more efforted in our pursuits
of excellence, more studied to show ourselves approved!
Let us break their bands asunder----that is -let us be without shame be free
to commit all manner of abominations -let us make the rules and
then let us make men to accept us and further to give us respect
for even the laws will be changed ( by us to protect us)-and cast away their cords from us.- for even the righteousness of God's children
will not save them in earthly judgments says the wicked, as if
they would snap to pieces and destroy the mandates of God.......Oh
you kings, do you think yourselves Samsons? However mad the resolutions
to revolt from God , it is one that man has persevered in ever
since his creation , and he continues in it to today. But lo..
Gods presence and coming will be a refiner's fire, and like Fuller's
soap , and the day therof shall burn even as an oven -take Heed
you earthly wise thou heavenly foolish .
Thou earth continues to love
not her rightful monarch's but recurringly choose the ways of
the usurper -in that day of awesome settlement Jehovah's power
to give the kingdom to his Begotten will stand Tall in testimony
to His ever miraculous working power! To the graceless neck the
yoke of Christ is intolerable, but to the saved sinner it is easy
and light. We may judge ourselves by this-do we love the yoke
, or do we wish to cast it off from us?
He that sitteth in the heavens
shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
That men would dare to try to
rule over others without God's guidance is as atrocious as giving
your child to prisoners to be raised. There need be a standard
of righteousness as there need be a spirit (Holy Spirit ) to guide
man .
What does God say ? Mark the
quiet dignity of the omnipotent One , and the contempt that He
pours upon the princes and their raging people . He has not taken
the trouble to rise up and do battle with them-He despises them
, He knows how absurd , how irrational , how futile are their
attempts against Him -He therefore laughs at them.
5Then
shall he speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in his sore
displeasure.
6Yet
have I set my kings upon my holy hill of Zion.
After he has laughed then He
speaks ; he needs not smite; the breath of His lips are enough. At
the moment that their power is at its height , and their fury
most violent , then shall His Word go forth against them.
God laughs at those that seek
to defy Him ."Yet" says He '" despite your
malice , despite your tumultuous gatherings , despite the wisdom
of your counsels, despite the craft of your lawgivers, yet
have I set my king upon the holy hill of Zion
God's Anointed is appointed-God
has already done that which the enemy seeks to prevent. Jesus
sits upon the throne of power in the midst of HIS church.
In him is Zion"s best safeguard;
let her citizens be glad in it.
"Thy walls are strength,
and at thy gates
a guard of heavenly warriors
waits
Nor shall thy deep foundations
move
Fixed on his counsels and
his love.
Thy foes in vain designs
engage;
Against his throne in vain
they rage,
Like rising waves , with
angry roar,
That dash and die upon the
shore."
7I will
declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art My Son;
this day have I begotten thee.
8Ask
of me ,and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance,
and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9Thou
shall break them with a rod of iron; thou shall dash them in pieces
like a potter's vessel.The Psalms
wears something of a dramatic form , for now another person is
introduced as speaking. We have looked into the counsel-chamber
of the wicked , and to the throne of god, and now we behold the
anointed declaring the rights of Sovereignty, and warning the
traitors of their doom. Thou art
My Son; -is noble proof of the glorious
divinity of our Immanuel. "For unto which of the angels at
any time ,Thou art my Son this day have I begotten thee .What
a mercy to have a divine Redeemer in which to rest our confidence!"Ask
of me even as a King to a favored one. Here he declares that his
very enemies are his inheritance (as is the wealth of the wicked
laid up for the just). To their face he declares this decree,
and Lo ! here cries the Anointed One , as He holds aloft in that
once
pierced hand the sceptre of his power"
He hath given me this , not only the right to be king , but the
power to conquer." Yes! Jehovah hath given to his Anointed
a rod of iron with which he shall break rebellious nations
in pieces , and despite their imperial strength, they shall be
but as potters vessels, easily dashed into shivers , when the
rod of iron is in the hand of the omnipotent Son of God. those
who will not bend must break. potters' vessels are not to be restored
if dashed in pieces , and the ruin of sinners will be hopeless
if Jesus shall smite them .
"Ye sinners seek his Grace
,
Whose wrath ye cannot bear ;
Fly to the shelter of his cross
,
And find salvation there."
10 Be wise
now therefore, O ye kings : be instructed ,ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve
the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss
the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his
wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all that put their
trust in Him.
As the scene again changes counsel is
given to those who have taken counsel to rebel . They are exhorted
to obey, and give the kiss of homage and affection to him whom
they have hated.
Be wise --It
is always wise to be instructed especially when that instruction
tends to the salvation of the soul. Be
wise now therefore delay no longer
, but let good reason weigh with you. Your warfare cannot succeed,
therefore desist and yield cheerfully to him who will make you
bow if you refuse his yoke.O how wise, how infinitely wise is
obedience to Jesus , and how dreadful is the folly of those who
continue to be his enemies! Serve
the Lord with fear
-let reverence and humility be mingled
with your service.
rejoice with trembling--there
must be holy fear mixed with Christian joy. This is a sacred compound
, yielding a sweet smell , and we must see to it that we burn
no other upon the altar.Fear without joy, is a torment; and joy,
without holy fear is would be presumption .It
is an awful thing to perish in the midst of sin ,
in the very way of rebellion ; and yet how easily could his wrath
destroy us suddenly. It needs not that his anger be heated seven
times hotter; let the fuel kindle but a little , and we are consumed
. Take heed sinner man, "our God is a consuming fire."
Note the benediction with which the psalm closes-Blessed are all that put their trust in Him.Have we a share in this blessedness ? Do we trust
in him ?Our faith may be slender as a spiders thread; but if it
be real , we are in our measure blessed. The more we trust the
more fully shall we know this blessedness. We may therefore close
the psalm with the prayer of the apostles " Lord increase
our faith"
Oh that man would seek to know the Savior-
there is joy unspeakable in His presence Blessed forever is the
King of Kings , The Lord of Lords.-the one true God.
again I salute Charles Haddon Spurgeon
from the book Treasury of David whence reading my heart was filled
with holy joy as the pictured exposition took on brilliance and
satisfied my soul; selah?
